2013 - BURNING MAN, ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND

To approach this work of art in the night may make you feel as if you're moving on a spaceship towards a small galaxy spinning in the inky blackness of space. The orbs on its branches twinkle like clusters of stars in the sky.

As you come closer, you recognize a massive tree rising 25ft from the ground and reaching out with a 25ft fiery canopy. Huge branches twist, intertwine, and touch the sky, branching out into six massive nebulas, spinning orbs of fire. Each ball ranges from 3ft to 5ft in diameter and is capable of spinning as slow as 1 RPM or as fast as 300 RPM. This creates variable fire effects, from spinning candles, to bright blue balls of fire, to raging orange infernos high above you. Below you, the ground is covered in a giant pool of light, made from dozens of twinkling LED stars shining outwards. The pool creates an aura around the sculpture and bathes those below in a cool glow. The structural base forms an observation ring of benches that creates seating for over 50 people.

To sit in the embrace of this tree is to cross over onto a new astral plane, projected onto the grounds of a desert from a world away.
